UNAU takes part in UN training for effective advocacy in UN processes

The second session of the "Effective Advocacy in UN Processes," was held for 5 days in September 2013 at Zanzibar, Tanzania. The training was a build up from the one organized in March 2013. Co-learning workshop organized by UNA Finland, UNA Tanzania and WFUNA.

The training saw the participation of the UNAs of the East African Community: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda; CSOs, journalists and representatives of the local government. The program aimed at building strong advocacy networks on sustainable development, especially in relation to climate change, indigenous people’s issues and human rights.

Participants discussed some of the pressing matters rural communities being faced in the region as they adapt to the effects of climate change. Land grabbing among others is most challenging in communities, especially the Masai in EAC. These issues were discussed along with gender and LGBTI rights and views shared amongst participants.

A new advocacy tool was introduced to the participants that is the participatory video. This tool allowed participants and communities to have hands-on training; video was used to document some of the issues. This advocacy tool was introduced by Gareth Benest from Insight share UK and one of the beneficiaries Jemmimah form Kenya.

It was a very educative session. The sessions for the conference were facilitated by Doug from Bare foot, Linda from UNA-Uganda, Malli from Mara Tanzania, Irene from WFUNA, Gareth from Insight share, Jemmimah from Kenya.

The workshop was an invaluable opportunity to build the capacity of United Nations Associations in the region, there was sharing of how these UNAs could jointly work on projects to better the region with great emphasis on the Post 2015 agenda, UN human rights, climate change and the world conference for the indigenous person that is slated for September 2014.
