UNAU commemorates UN Day
Festivities to mark the United Nations Day 2011 were held at the Kyambogo University in Kampala jointly organised by United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU), UN in Uganda and Kyambogo UNAU chapter.
The UN Day falls on 24th October of every year and is recognized by all UN member states worldwide as the world body’s founding day.The UN has 193 member states with the Republic of South Sudan being latest of the states to join the UN flock.
Under the theme: “Harnessing youth towards sustainable development: Shared roles and responsibilities.” The UN Day commemoration was attended by over 200 youth from different education institutions that host UNAU chapters and UN Clubs. Various activities including music, dance, drama and poetry characterized the commemoration.
UNAU’s General Secretary Baguma Tinkasimire Richard sensitised the youth about the aims and objectives of the UN Organisation. He also talked about population issues pointing to the need to undertake actions to highlight the 7billion campaign. He encouraged the youth to participate in activities to combat maternal death in Uganda. He said it was also important to focus on improving the country’s population which currently stands at 33million people.
The day was crowned with tree planting by Kironde Brian representing UNFPA, while the other was by the students represented by Kyambogo student leaders. Wangusa Michael form the UNRC's office attended the commemoration ceremony.
