Youth action in combating maternal death
During the Uganda Model UN 2010 conference, young people declared and pledged to carry out clean-up activities in their communities in order to contribute to combating maternal death and real-ise MDGs.
The Makerere University Business School chapter spear headed the drive starting with their Health Service Center. Nkumba University followed suit with various activities that highlighted the issues at their campus.
Other activities like arts exhibition, training, workshops and conferences disseminating MDGs, 7bil-lion action plan and maternal health information are being undertaken and are to run till the end of 2011.
UNAU appreciates the efforts of the young people from the respective chapters and calls upon other youth and community members to join the race to fight against maternal deaths in Uganda.
United Nations Association of Uganda on the fight to eradicate poverty
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year since 1993, when the General Assembly, by resolution 47/196, designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries, particularly in developing countries — a need that has become a development priority.
Poverty is an affront to human dignity. We believe everyone has a right to a decent living.
On the 06th October 2011 UNA-Uganda in collaboration with Mengo Secondary School commemorated the poverty day with the theme "Poverty and Human Dignity." A number of institutions took part in the commemoration these included teachers and students from Norway, Kololo, Old Kampala, Kalinabiri, and Nakasero Secondary Schools UN Clubs. Kyambogo University and Makerere University were also part of the great day.

UNAU commemorates UN Day
Festivities to mark the United Nations Day 2011 were held at the Kyambogo University in Kampala jointly organised by United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU), UN in Uganda and Kyambogo UNAU chapter.
The UN Day falls on 24th October of every year and is recognized by all UN member states worldwide as the world body’s founding day.The UN has 193 member states with the Republic of South Sudan being latest of the states to join the UN flock.
Under the theme: “Harnessing youth towards sustainable development: Shared roles and responsibilities.” The UN Day commemoration was attended by over 200 youth from different education institutions that host UNAU chapters and UN Clubs. Various activities including music, dance, drama and poetry characterized the commemoration.
World population at 7,000,000,000 – and 33,000,000 for Uganda.
On 31th Oct 2011 one of the children born will make the world’s population total up to 7billion people in the world. Uganda's total population will be 33million.
The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon will unveil the stop-clock that is counting down towards the day when the 7billionth life will be born.
India having the highest number of babies born in a day stands a greater chance of having this child born in their country.
It is everyone’s responsibility to intervene and participate in activities that check on or regulate rates of population growth in their respective nations.
In Uganda through the Joint Population (JPP) that was launched in June 2011, the United Nations came together under 10 of its agencies in conjunction with the Ugandan government to sensitize masses about the effects of such an alarming population increase in the country. The JPP is on-going and will run for 4 years.
UNAU action towards combating maternal death-in uganda
Uganda’s maternal mortality rate continues at an unacceptably high level. While maternal mortality figures vary widely by source and are highly controversial, the best estimates for Uganda suggest that roughly between 6,500 and 13,500 women and girls die each year due to pregnancy-related complications. Additionally, another 130,000 to 405,000 women and girls will suffer from disabilities caused by complications during pregnancy. i.e. at least sixteen women die every day in Uganda due to maternal related issues.
In 08th to 09th July 2011UNA-Uganda organised a conference "UMUN 2011" at Nkumba University to sensitise the youth about maternal related issues. The conference theme “Combating Maternal Death -putting the youth at the frontline in order to realize the MDGs.” aimed at mobilising the youth to fight against the increasing maternal death rate in the country. At Nkumba University over 200 youth from different schools and Universities converged to discuss and provide resolutions to curb the current problem in the country.

Uganda seriously warned
Researchers have warned that the unchecked Population growth would affect/undo the progress that the country has made. Large population strains both social and economic infrastructure resulting into the decline of Uganda’s economy.
A body that advises the government on population growth policy issues, the Population Secretariat emphasizes that there is need for effective planning to ensure that the rapid population growth does not turn into a demographic burden.
UNFPA and the Population Secretariat in Kampala have highlighted seven key matters that countries facing high population growth issues like Uganda should take consider seriously. They include involving youth in planning and decision-making, keeping girls in schools, involving males in family planning and ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted and safe. Others are focusing on youth skills and development, ensuring a healthy environment for the people and their environment and planning for urbanization.
Nakasero senior secondary school UN club
On Saturday 25th June 2011 Nakasero Senior Secondary school had the UN Club handover ceremony at their school. The function started at 3pm with the National anthem, some entertainment and speeches.
The Patron of UNAU Club Nakasero Senior Secondary School Mrs. Tugume Morious welcomed the team from the secretariat and thanked them for honoring the Club’s invitation. She expressed her gratitude towards UN Club of Nakasero S.S.S and thanked the Secretariat for all the support rendered. She encouraged her students to take up the opportunities of acquiring great training, political, and entrepreneurship skills that the organization offers to the students.
Responsibility to Protect (R2P)

The Responsibility to protect (R2P) was adopted as a norm at the United Nations World Summit in 2005. The responsibility to protect refers to the obligation of sates towards their populations, and towards all populations at risk of genocide and other mass atrocities.
Genocide
Genocide is defined in Article 2 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of genocide
(1948) as “any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy , in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcing transferring children of the group to another group.” More information is available at www.genocide.org.
