Uganda Model UN (UMUN)

The Uganda Model United Nations (UMUN) is a national conference where young people between the ages of 18 -35 from different backgrounds get an opportunity to practice diplomacy, leadership and get experiential learning on the conduct of the United Nations. Deliberations focus is on diverse national, regional and global issues relevant to young people and development.
UMUN 2012 will be hosted by Gulu University from 16th-19th August 2012, under the theme, “Peace Building for Sustainable Development; bringing the
UMUN has been conducted for the last three years; at Makerere University (2009), Makerere University Business School (2010) and Nkumba University (2011).youth on board”. This year the organ to be simulated will be the Security Council.
Equitable gender representation is a guiding principle in the selection of participants and in all activities related to UMUN.
UMUN 2012 conference will bring together over 100 young people in Universities majorly from Uganda to discuss strategies and make recommendations for sustainable peace and security as a pre-requisite for development. UNAU thus shall be empowering youthful and energetic agents for change as well as promoting peace and enabling young people to engage in this important discourse.
UMUN 2012 conference's main goal is to create a forum for empowering youthful and energetic change agents for peace building and sustainable development. through debate and other activities the youth will discuss matters related to building sustainable peace. Additional deliberations will be held in concurrent caucus sessions that will feature four key selected areas relevant to peace building and sustainable development which include:
- Caucus 1: Creating economic empowerment.
- Caucus 2: Promoting social engagement.
- Caucus 3: Ensuring equity for vulnerable groups.
- Caucus 4: Strengthening migration and resettlement policies.
United Nations Association of Uganda the organisers of UMUN 2012 conference expect to achieve the following results:
- Declaration on concrete proposals for strengthening peace building for sustainable development agreed upon by the conference participants. This will be disseminated to government institutions, the Parliament of Uganda, UN Agencies, WFUNA and other UNAs worldwide.
- Sensitizing at least 100 youth on the causative factors that lead to break down of peace and how they affect development.
- Having at least one peace building and sustainable development forum held in each of the participating university as a follow up activity
